Well Woman Exam Q & A

What happens during a well-woman exam?

Your well-woman exam is your time to get answers to all of your health questions and get a thorough analysis of your well-being. Depending on your overall health, family medical history, and any current concerns, your well-woman exam may include:

  • Birth control counseling
  • Body mass index evaluation
  • Vaccination updates
  • Pap smear or pelvic exam
  • Breast exam

You might need laboratory testing, including blood work or a urinalysis, too, especially if you need testing for a sexually transmitted disease.

How often do I need a well-woman exam?

In general, Dr. Farghaly wants to see you annually for a well-woman exam. But you may also need exams outside of your routine well-woman visit. For instance, you might need to see Dr. Farghaly in between routine visits if you:

  • Had an abnormal Pap test
  • Feel a lump in your breast
  • Have symptoms of an STD
  • Think you have a urinary tract infection
  • Want to get pregnant or think you might be pregnant

Dr. Farghaly might also want to see you more frequently if you need help managing a chronic condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

How do I prepare for a well-woman exam?

It’s helpful to make a few considerations and preparations before your well-woman exam. For example, if you’re due for a Pap smear, avoid scheduling your visit during your menstrual period. While you can certainly have a Pap smear during your period, sometimes the results won’t be accurate. Therefore, Dr. Farghaly generally recommends avoiding scheduling Pap smears during this time.

If you’re going to need blood work, you might have to fast for a short period beforehand, particularly for cholesterol testing. But if you can’t — or forget — to fast, you can always come back to the clinic at a later time for your blood testing. You can further prepare for your well-woman exam by:

  • Gathering medical records from other providers
  • Knowing the first day of your last period
  • Making a list of all medications, including over-the-counter varieties

To help accommodate your busy schedule, Dr. Farghaly offers flexible scheduling for well-woman exams, including same-day visits if needed.
